Samsung Electronics Enters Strategic Partnership with OpenAI to Advance AI Infrastructure
Samsung Electronics has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, aimed at accelerating the progress of global artificial intelligence infrastructure. This collaboration positions Samsung as a key memory partner, supplying advanced semiconductor solutions to OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.
The agreement anticipates substantial memory demand from OpenAI. Samsung estimates the requirement for DRAM wafers could reach up to 900,000 per month. To fulfill this need, Samsung will leverage its comprehensive portfolio of high-performance, energy-efficient DRAM solutions.
Beyond memory supply, Samsung offers specialized expertise in advanced chip packaging and heterogeneous integration, combining memory and system semiconductors. This enables the delivery of unique solutions tailored for OpenAI’s specific requirements.
Further extending the scope of this partnership, Samsung SDS will contribute its expertise in advanced data center technologies to the design, development, and operation of OpenAI’s Stargate AI data centers. Samsung SDS will provide consulting, deployment, and management services, assisting businesses seeking to integrate OpenAI’s models into their internal systems. Additionally, Samsung SDS has become an official reseller of OpenAI’s services in South Korea, supporting local businesses in adopting ChatGPT Enterprise offerings.
In a related initiative, Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries will collaborate on the development of floating data centers. These facilities, designed to address land scarcity and potentially reduce cooling costs and carbon emissions compared to land-based data centers, represent an innovative approach to AI infrastructure deployment.
Finally, Samsung is exploring the broader internal adoption of ChatGPT to facilitate AI transformation across its various business units. This initiative aims to leverage AI capabilities to enhance workplace efficiency and productivity.
