Qualcomm Declares Victory in Arm Chip Licensing Dispute.

In a significant legal development, Qualcomm has prevailed in its licensing dispute with Arm. The legal proceedings, initiated in 2022 following Arm’s acquisition of Nuvia, centered on allegations of contract breach concerning Qualcomm’s utilization of Nuvia technology in the development of its custom Phoenix cores.
The protracted legal battle has culminated in a complete resolution. A U.S. District Court judge in the District of Delaware dismissed the final outstanding claim in Arm’s lawsuit against Qualcomm and Nuvia, ruling in favor of Nuvia. This decision affirms Qualcomm’s position regarding the licensing of Nuvia technology.
This ruling follows a December 2024 jury verdict which unanimously found that Qualcomm had not violated the Nuvia licensing agreement with Arm, and that the CPU core design obtained in the Nuvia acquisition was validly covered under Qualcomm’s existing license with Arm. The current decision upholds the jury’s findings and rejects Arm’s motion for a new trial.
With the conclusion of this case, Qualcomm can definitively assert its victory. The company has indicated that this outcome strengthens its capacity “to drive innovation across the semiconductor industry and address the world’s most important technological challenges.”
It is important to note that a separate lawsuit filed by Qualcomm against Arm remains active. This suit alleges breach of contract, “improper interference with customer relationships,” and a “pattern of conduct seeking to hinder innovation and better position Arm’s own products over its long-standing partners.”
