Google is implementing significant changes to the sideloading process on the Android operating system, focusing on enhanced security and user control. Previously, sideloading applications, the process of installing applications from sources outside the Google Play Store, involved straightforward procedures. However, recent developments necessitate a refined approach to ensure user safety and mitigate potential security risks.
As announced in August, Google is mandating developer verification for applications distributed primarily outside of the Play Store. This initiative aims to increase the security of sideloaded applications. Concurrently, Google is introducing a mechanism to provide sideloading privileges to “experienced users,” including developers and power users, who demonstrate a heightened risk tolerance and a desire to install unverified applications. These users will be able to bypass the new security measures, but will be presented with clear warnings regarding the inherent risks.
“We are building a new advanced flow that allows experienced users to accept the risks of installing software that isn’t verified,” stated Matthew Forsythe, Director of Product Management, Android App Safety. “We are designing this flow specifically to resist coercion, ensuring that users aren’t tricked into bypassing these safety checks while under pressure from a scammer. It will also include clear warnings to ensure users fully understand the risks involved, but ultimately, it puts the choice in their hands.”
The “advanced flow” for developer verification is currently under development, with Google soliciting feedback in the coming months. The initial rollout is scheduled for 2026, targeting specific countries, including Brazil, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand. A broader global rollout is anticipated later in 2026.
