Google I/O 2026: May Dates Confirmed for Next-Gen AI and Android 17 Reveal

Google has officially set the dates for its annual developer showcase, I/O 2026, where the tech giant is expected to unveil a massive wave of artificial intelligence breakthroughs and the first deep dive into Android 17. The two-day conference will begin with a major keynote on May 19, returning to the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, with a full digital experience available for global viewers.
Gemini and the Next Phase of AI
Artificial intelligence will once again dominate the agenda as Google pushes to integrate its Gemini models further into the consumer ecosystem. Following the recent launch of “Agentic Vision” in Gemini 3, analysts expect Google to showcase “Pro” and “Ultra” updates that allow the AI to perform complex tasks across multiple apps autonomously.
A major focus will likely be Gemini’s expansion into areas where it currently lags, such as native integration within Wear OS for smartwatches and Android Auto for vehicles.
Android 17: Stability and “Liquid Glass”
With the first Android 17 beta already in the hands of developers as of February 2026, I/O will serve as the platform for revealing its most consumer-facing features. Early leaks suggest a “liquid glass” design aesthetic, drawing inspiration from translucent UI elements.
Beyond visuals, Android 17 is set to enforce strict new rules for large-screen devices, preventing apps from opting out of resizability on foldables and tablets. We also expect to see “Handoff” capabilities that allow users to move active tasks seamlessly between phones, tablets, and the rumored “Aluminium OS” laptops.
The “Aluminium OS” and Hardware Rumors
One of the most anticipated segments of I/O 2026 is the potential unveiling of “Aluminium OS.” This project reportedly aims to replace or heavily modify ChromeOS by utilizing an Android-based kernel, creating a more unified experience for Google-powered laptops and tablets.
On the hardware front, while the Pixel 11 and Pixel Watch 5 typically debut later in the year, Google may provide technical updates on its augmented reality partnerships. This includes “Project Aura” smart glasses, developed alongside Xreal and Warby Parker, which are slated for a 2026 release.
