AMD and OpenAI: Powering AI’s Future Through Strategic Collaboration.

AMD and OpenAI have entered into a multi-year strategic partnership, marking a significant development in the ongoing competition within the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure landscape. This agreement designates AMD as a core strategic compute partner for OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT and other advanced AI models.
A key component of this collaboration involves OpenAI’s commitment to deploying over 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs. The deployment is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2026, utilizing AMD’s Instinct MI450 series GPUs. This substantial investment in AMD’s hardware underscores OpenAI’s strategy to scale its compute capabilities to meet the escalating demands of AI development.
Dr. Lisa Su, AMD CEO, stated, “We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to deliver AI compute at a massive scale. This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to create a true win-win, enabling the world’s most ambitious AI buildout and advancing the entire AI ecosystem.”
This announcement follows OpenAI’s recent strategic partnership with Nvidia. Under that agreement, Nvidia is committed to investing $100 billion in OpenAI and deploying 10 gigawatts of its systems. The AMD partnership further solidifies OpenAI’s commitment to diversifying its compute infrastructure and enhancing its ability to support advanced AI research and development.
Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, commented, “This partnership is a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realize AI’s full potential. AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced AI to everyone faster.”
Beyond the hardware deployment, the agreement also encompasses the joint development of critical infrastructure designed to address the expanding compute requirements of AI applications. Furthermore, OpenAI is slated to receive over 160 million shares of AMD stock, contingent upon the achievement of specific performance milestones.
