Apple’s Satellite Maps: iPhone & Watch Gaining New Remote Views.

Apple is actively developing enhancements to its satellite connectivity features for both iPhone and Apple Watch platforms, with several advanced functionalities projected for future release. According to a recent report by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the company has a comprehensive roadmap of improvements planned for its satellite communication capabilities. These advancements are contingent upon upgrades to the Globalstar network, which will be essential to meeting Apple’s stringent performance requirements in the coming years.

A key focus of these developments is the implementation of satellite-based mapping features. This functionality will enable iPhone and Apple Watch users to utilize Apple Maps and navigate in environments devoid of cellular connectivity. Furthermore, Apple is reportedly developing an application programming interface (API) to facilitate integration of satellite connectivity within third-party applications, broadening the scope of its utility.
Apple aims to streamline the user experience by eliminating the need to orient devices towards the sky for satellite signal acquisition. Future iterations of iPhones are expected to maintain satellite connectivity indoors and even within users’ pockets. A significant technological advancement anticipated for the 2026 iPhone 18 series will be the integration of 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) support. This technology will allow mobile network operators to leverage satellite infrastructure to extend network coverage into previously underserved areas.

In addition to mapping, Apple is also working to enhance messaging capabilities, specifically focusing on the ability to transmit and receive photographic data via satellite connections. Apple’s initiative into satellite connectivity was accelerated with the release of the iPhone 14 series. The report also indicates that some Apple executives are carefully evaluating the broader implications of venturing further into satellite networking, a domain traditionally dominated by telecommunications carriers.
