iPhone 17 Pro: The Official Camera of the MLS Cup Final.

Apple and Major League Soccer (MLS) have collaborated to integrate the iPhone 17 Pro into the broadcast of the Inter Miami vs. Vancouver Whitecaps final. This initiative signifies a strategic deployment of consumer-grade technology within a professional sports production context.

The broadcast will utilize four iPhone 17 Pro units, supplementing the existing array of over 30 cameras. These iPhones will be strategically positioned behind the goal and within the crowd to capture supplementary footage, including fan reactions and ambient atmosphere. All footage originating from the iPhones will be distinctly tagged with “Shot on iPhone” branding on-screen.

Prior to the final, MLS conducted extensive testing of the iPhone within its production infrastructure. Engineering evaluations focused on key performance metrics, including latency, thermal management, wireless stability, and synchronization capabilities. These tests were conducted over several months to ensure seamless integration.

The selection of the iPhone 17 Pro was influenced by its integrated ProRes workflow, which facilitates efficient color matching with existing broadcast equipment. While the iPhone’s image quality and streaming reliability may not match those of dedicated, high-end broadcasting equipment, it offers significant cost advantages and leverages Apple’s established brand recognition and market penetration. The inclusion of “Shot on iPhone” branding within the broadcast is expected to enhance audience engagement and create additional marketing opportunities.
