Flip vs. Fold: Black Friday Battle – Samsung Z Flip7 Takes Motorola?

The resurgence of foldable smartphones has brought renewed attention to the flip phone form factor, particularly with the introduction of devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 and the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025. This article provides a comparative analysis of these two prominent offerings.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7:
The Galaxy Z Flip7 represents a significant evolution over its predecessor. A key enhancement is the expanded 4.1-inch cover display, redesigned with a conventional shape for improved usability when the device is closed. The phone’s dimensions have been refined, achieving a thinner profile of 6.5mm when open and 13.7mm when closed, compared to the Z Flip6’s 6.9mm and 14.9mm respectively. Furthermore, battery capacity has been increased to 4,300mAh, a 300mAh enhancement. Powering the device is the Exynos 2500 processor, marking its debut in the Z Flip series and delivering robust performance. Notably, the Z Flip7 is the first in its series to support Samsung DeX. The camera system, however, remains unchanged, incorporating a 50MP main sensor (1/1.57″) and a 12MP ultra-wide lens.
Motorola Razr Ultra 2025:
Drawing inspiration from the iconic Motorola Razr, the Ultra 2025 boasts a 4.0-inch cover display and a 7.0-inch internal display. The device incorporates the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and features 16GB of RAM, exceeding the Z Flip7’s 12GB. While it lacks Ready For support, Motorola’s equivalent to Samsung’s DeX, it compensates with other advantages. The Razr Ultra 2025 incorporates a 4,700mAh battery, providing a longer operational duration as demonstrated by its active use score of 15:10h, superior to the Z Flip7’s 11:52h. The Razr Ultra 2025 also has faster wired charging at 68W, achieving 78% charge in 30 minutes, compared to the Z Flip7’s 25W and 46% charge in the same time frame. Wireless charging capabilities also exceed the Samsung’s at 30W versus 15W.
Both devices are rated IP48 for ingress protection, offering resistance against submersion.
Software and Ecosystem Considerations:
A critical differentiating factor is the software support. Samsung pledges seven Android OS updates for the Galaxy Z Flip7, while Motorola is committed to only three OS updates and an additional year of security patches for the Razr. The disparity is further accentuated by the fact that the Galaxy launched with Android 16, whereas the Razr launched with Android 15. This divergence in update commitment may influence long-term device usability and security.
