Xiaomi’s Rear Screen: No Fad, Here to Stay on Pro Models.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max models, launched in China last month, feature a distinctive design element: a rear-facing screen integrated into the camera module, reminiscent of the iPhone’s camera island. This design choice, previously explored by Xiaomi in earlier iterations, initially prompted skepticism regarding its long-term viability. However, subsequent developments indicate a sustained commitment to this innovation.
Contrary to initial speculation, Xiaomi President Lu Weibing has confirmed the inclusion of a rear screen in the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max models. This decision underscores the company’s commitment to the technology. Furthermore, Xiaomi is intensifying its research and development efforts to expand the utility of the rear screen through enhanced software features.
Significant investment has already been allocated to this endeavor. Xiaomi has reportedly invested CNY 1 billion in R&D for the 2.1-inch LTPO AMOLED screen featured on the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max models. This investment appears to have yielded positive results, contributing to record-breaking sales performance. Initial sales figures within the first five minutes of availability set a new benchmark, followed by achieving one million shipments in an unprecedented timeframe.
Overall sales of the Xiaomi 17 series experienced a 20% increase compared to the previous generation. The Pro series, specifically, demonstrated a substantial performance surge, with sales figures tripling those of the Xiaomi 15 Pro. Planned software updates are slated to enhance the functionality of the rear screen, with real-time translation capabilities scheduled for release by the end of the current month. Xiaomi’s roadmap includes the continuous introduction of new features on a monthly basis, signaling a long-term strategy for this unique design element.
